I’m writing you today, as one of your constituents, to request a meeting to discuss fair compensation for front line staff at BC’s Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and Outpatient Clinics (FPH).

I am a member of the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) employed by FHP.

According to Therapeutic Relational Security Training, BCGEU members make up 90 percent of staff who have direct contact with patients on the units - more than any other discipline. We are front line staff, with an injury ratio that is more than 65 percent higher compared to other disciplines. As part of our job description, BCGEU members are the primary contact for all patient needs and interactions outside of delivering medications. However, we are the only staff working at FPH who do not receive extra compensation for “recruitment and retention”.

FPH nurses and BCGEU members work side-by-side, yet nurses receive recruitment and retention pay or, a Forensic Premium, while BCGEU members do not. As this compensation is specifically offered to nurses due to the increased risks at Forensic, we are left to wonder why BCGEU are not afforded the same financial recognition.

If we are to be recognized as valued members of the care team at FPH, we feel equally entitled to recruitment and retention compensation. It is widely known and accepted that our worksites have experienced a high level of violence, as continues to be seen in our statistics. We work under dangerous conditions to offer vital services to some of BC’s most vulnerable residents. We are continually assaulted at the worksite, often requiring medical attention. The work we do is important to all British Columbians and we need to be fairly compensated.

Please let me know when you are available to meet to discuss this further. My co-workers and I have petitioned FPH management, have met with Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and now we are talking to our individual MLAs to move this matter forward.
