Affordable housing for Burnaby

Together we can bring more non-market, affordable housing to Burnaby – have your say!

The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has purchased land in Burnaby to build its new office. To maximize use of this land and help address the housing crisis, the union has submitted a proposal to the City of Burnaby asking for rezoning the property in order to create hundreds of affordable housing units as well as childcare spaces.

The proposal includes:

  • 292 rental housing units; with a minimum of 50% locked as below-market affordable rents

This project would demonstrate a new model for how affordable housing can and should be developed for working people – but we need Burnaby City Council to approve the rezoning of the land at an upcoming public hearing on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

Zoning changes happen in cities all the time to allow for higher density. When it comes to building affordable housing at below-market rates, a zoning change like this should be a top priority!

Join us in calling on all Burnaby city councillors to support Rez. #20-27, a project that will see hundreds of affordable homes built in Burnaby’s Royal Oak neighbourhood.

  • The City of Burnaby’s 2021 Housing Needs Report identifies a need for 2,400 rental units of affordable housing for lower- and moderate-income households by 2025. This project will help the city to move closer to this target by adding at least 146 below market units.

  • Burnaby’s draft Child Care Action Plan states that Burnaby needs to add more than 1,800 child care spaces by 2025. This project will help the city move closer to this target by adding 49 new child care spaces.

  • This proposal is consistent with the recommendations from the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Housing Final Report from 2019, including increasing the supply of affordable rental housing and approving additional density for projects providing below market rental housing.
